Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)

The Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington holds the world's largest collection of art, design and performance — 2.8 million objects across 145 galleries covering fashion, furniture, ceramics, jewellery, photography and architecture from every era and culture. Like the Natural History Museum and Science Museum, it's free to enter and sits in the same South Kensington museum cluster.

Hours & Tickets

Open daily 10:00am–5:45pm, with late opening until 10:00pm on Fridays. Entry to the permanent collections is free. Major temporary exhibitions are ticketed separately and often sell out; book online in advance for any exhibition you specifically want to see.

What to See

The Cast Courts (Rooms 46A and 46B) are among the most remarkable rooms in London — full-scale plaster casts of Trajan's Column and Michelangelo's David, made when the originals were inaccessible to most travellers. The fashion galleries are consistently strong. The medieval and Renaissance galleries contain works that would anchor any European museum's collection. The café in the John Madejski Garden is worth a stop in good weather.

Getting There

South Kensington station (Circle, District and Piccadilly lines) connects via a pedestrian tunnel directly to the museum quarter — the V&A, Natural History Museum and Science Museum are all within a short walk of each other.

Tips for Visiting

• Friday evenings (open until 10pm) are particularly calm and a good option for a quieter visit.
• The Cast Courts are a highlight many visitors miss — make a point of finding them.
• A combined South Kensington museum day (V&A and Natural History Museum) works well since both are free and adjacent.
