One Week in London: 7-Day Itinerary
A week in London gives you enough time to see the essentials properly, explore several neighbourhoods, take a day trip and still have room to slow down. Here's a day-by-day structure that covers the best without feeling like a checklist.
Day 1: Arrival & South Bank
Check in, recover from travel if needed, then walk the South Bank in the evening — Westminster Bridge to Borough Market and back. Low effort, high reward, sets the city up visually. Dinner at Borough Market if it's Wednesday–Saturday, or in Southwark.
Day 2: Royal London
Westminster Abbey (book ahead), walk to Buckingham Palace via St James's Park. Afternoon: the National Gallery (free, Trafalgar Square). Evening: Covent Garden or Soho for dinner and the theatre district atmosphere.
Day 3: East London History
Tower of London (book ahead, arrive at 9am). Tower Bridge glass walkway. Afternoon: lunch at Borough Market (Wed–Sat), then Shoreditch for street art and coffee. Evening: dinner in Hackney or Shoreditch.
Day 4: South Kensington Museums
Natural History Museum and the V&A (both free). Afternoon: Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace. This is a deliberately local day — no cross-city travel.
Day 5: Day Trip
Bath (90 min from Paddington) or Cambridge (50–80 min from King's Cross) — pick based on interest. Return for the evening — a neighbourhood pub or Indian restaurant in the area.
Day 6: East & Market Day (if Saturday)
Broadway Market in Hackney in the morning. Victoria Park walk. Afternoon: Brick Lane Sunday Market if this is a Sunday, or Columbia Road Flower Market (Sunday only). Bermondsey Beer Mile in the afternoon if you're interested.
Day 7: Slow Day & Favourite Returns
Revisit a neighbourhood you liked. British Museum if you haven't been. Afternoon tea if it's on the list. Evening: book a West End show — best planned before you arrive.
Tips
- Book Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and any theatre in advance before you leave home.
- Check what day your Day 6 falls on — market days matter more in London than in most cities.
- Build in half a day of nothing — seven days of constant sightseeing is tiring.
- Pay for transport contactlessly — Tube and bus with a bank card, daily and weekly caps apply.
