London Weekend Guide: The Best of Saturday & Sunday
A London weekend β whether you're visiting from elsewhere in the UK or from abroad β works best when you play to what London specifically does at weekends: the markets are open, the parks are full of life, and the city has a particular energy. Here's how to structure it well.
Saturday Morning: Market First
Saturday morning belongs to the markets. Borough Market (south side of London Bridge) for food β arrive by 10am before the lunchtime crowds peak. Broadway Market in Hackney for a more neighbourhood feel and strong coffee. Portobello Road (Notting Hill) for antiques β the serious dealers are there from 8am, gone by 2pm. Pick one and commit to it; trying to do two markets in a morning makes neither work properly.
Saturday Afternoon: Neighbourhood or Museum
After the market, either head to a neighbourhood (Shoreditch east of Borough, Notting Hill west of Portobello) and walk it properly, or use the afternoon for a major attraction. Tate Modern and the South Bank walk are ideal for a Borough Market morning β it's a 15-minute walk along the riverside. The British Museum works well after Broadway Market.
Saturday Evening: Dinner & Theatre
London Saturday evenings are the peak β restaurants at their busiest, theatre at its most electric. Book dinner in advance (Covent Garden, Soho or wherever you'll be after the afternoon), then either a West End show (book this before you arrive) or the bar/nightlife circuit depending on preference.
Sunday: Slower Pace
Sunday in London is for the specific Sunday experiences: Columbia Road Flower Market (East London, 8amβ3pm) for extraordinary floral atmosphere. A proper Sunday roast at a gastropub (arrive at noon when they open β they fill up). Afternoon in one of the parks β Hyde Park, Regent's Park or Hampstead Heath are all at their best on a Sunday afternoon. Sunday evening is quieter β good for a neighbourhood pub or an early dinner before leaving.
