London's New Year's Eve fireworks display over the Thames is one of the world's most televised and celebrated — launched from the London Eye and bridges along the South Bank, with a 12-minute show that's visible for miles around.

Ticketed Viewing Areas

Prime viewing areas along the South Bank and Embankment are ticketed, allocated by a TfL ballot that opens earlier in the year (usually from around September). Tickets are a ballot — you register, and winners are drawn randomly. This is the only way to guarantee a good view of the fireworks from the Thames riverside. Prices are typically around £10–20 per person.

Free Watching Spots

Many locations further from the Thames offer partial fireworks views for free — Primrose Hill, Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath, Alexandra Palace in North London, and Greenwich Park all offer elevated views of the London skyline and can see the fireworks from a distance. These spots fill up; arrive 2–3 hours before midnight for a good position.

Practical Tips

Public transport runs all night on New Year's Eve — the Tube and buses are free from around 11pm on 31 December until the service resumes on 1 January. Getting home is slow but possible. Expect severely reduced traffic movement in central London — central area streets are restricted.

Tips
