Japanese Food in London
London has one of Europe's best Japanese food scenes โ driven by a long-established Japanese community concentrated particularly around the West End and a quality standard that has risen dramatically over the past decade.
Japan Centre & Nearby (West End)
The area around Japan Centre on Shaftesbury Avenue is London's most accessible Japanese food cluster โ the food hall stocks Japanese groceries, prepared foods and bento, and several restaurants and ramen shops are within walking distance. It's not the cheapest area but the convenience for visitors in the West End is hard to beat.
Ramen
London has excellent ramen โ both from Japanese-owned chains (Bone Daddies, Kanada-ya) and smaller independents. Tonkotsu (pork bone broth) is the most popular style. Many of the best ramen places don't take reservations and have queues on weekends โ go early or late to avoid the busiest slots.
Beyond Sushi
London's Japanese food is strongest when you go beyond sushi โ izakaya dining (small dishes with drinks), yakitori (grilled skewers), katsu curry and kushikatsu (fried skewers) are all well represented and often at lower prices than sushi counters. The Japan Centre food hall is good for prepared Japanese food to eat immediately.
Tips
- Don't default to sushi โ London's ramen, izakaya and katsu options are where the real value is.
- Many of the best ramen spots don't take reservations โ weekday lunches avoid the longest waits.
- Japan Centre's food hall is useful for high-quality prepared Japanese food at accessible prices.
