Where to Stay in Covent Garden & Soho
Covent Garden and Soho are the most central and connected neighbourhoods in London for a first visit — within walking distance of almost everything in Zone 1, surrounded by restaurants and entertainment, and with fast Tube access when walking isn't enough.
Why Stay Here
Pure convenience — the Tower of London, British Museum, Trafalgar Square, South Bank and Buckingham Palace are all within 30 minutes on foot or a short Tube ride. The restaurant density means you never need to go far for dinner. The theatre district is literally on your doorstep. The trade-off is noise (Soho in particular is loud at night) and price (Zone 1 central costs more than equivalent quality further out).
Noise Considerations
Soho and the streets around Covent Garden are genuinely lively until late — this is both the point and the potential problem. If you're a light sleeper or go to bed early, prioritise hotels on quieter side streets or with double-glazed windows. The streets nearest the entertainment venues (Old Compton Street, Shaftesbury Avenue) are noisiest.
Hotels
The area has every price bracket from boutique independents to large chains. Mid-range and above are well represented; budget options are rarer here than in Zone 2.
Tips
- Ask specifically for a quiet room when booking — hotels in this area vary greatly by floor and street-facing direction.
- The premium over Zone 2 is real but the time savings compound across a multi-day trip.
- Covent Garden is slightly quieter at night than Soho while remaining very central.
