Elephant & Castle
Elephant and Castle, just south of the river, has undergone one of London's most dramatic regenerations over the past decade — the old shopping centre is gone, replaced by new developments, while the area's long-standing Latin American community and independent food scene remain a genuine draw.
The Latin American Quarter
Elephant and Castle has been home to London's largest Latin American community for decades — the area around the railway arches still holds Colombian, Peruvian and Ecuadorian restaurants and shops, even as redevelopment has reshaped much of the surrounding area. This is one of the most authentic Latin American food destinations in the city.
Mercato Metropolitano
A large indoor Italian-focused food hall occupying a former industrial site — dozens of independent vendors, a relaxed atmosphere and consistently good value, one of South London's best food hall destinations.
The Regeneration
The area has changed substantially — new residential towers, a rebuilt leisure centre and London College of Communication's redeveloped campus have replaced much of the older infrastructure. Public opinion on the changes is genuinely mixed among long-term residents.
Getting There
Elephant & Castle station (Bakerloo and Northern lines, National Rail) sits at the centre of the area.
Tips
- Seek out the Latin American restaurants under the railway arches — genuinely excellent and underrated.
- Mercato Metropolitano is a reliable food hall stop if you're passing through.
- The area continues to change rapidly — expect ongoing construction in parts.
