Notting Hill

Notting Hill is one of London's most photographed neighbourhoods — rows of pastel-painted townhouses, a famous Saturday market, and a relaxed, villagey feel that's a world away from the pace of central London.

Portobello Road Market

Running the length of Portobello Road, the market shifts character block by block: antiques near the Notting Hill Gate end, fashion and vintage clothing further along, and fruit, veg and street food toward the Golborne Road end. Saturday is the full market and by far the busiest day; weekday visits show a much quieter, smaller version.

The Coloured Houses

The pastel townhouses that make Notting Hill so recognisable are concentrated along Lancaster Road, Portobello Road and the streets just off them. These are private homes, so a respectful distance and no doorstep photos is basic courtesy — it's a residential area, not a film set.

Notting Hill Carnival

Each August bank holiday weekend, Notting Hill hosts Europe's largest street carnival — sound systems, Caribbean food, costume parades and enormous crowds. It's a completely different neighbourhood on carnival weekend compared to any other time of year.

Getting There

Notting Hill Gate (Central, Circle & District lines) and Ladbroke Grove (Circle & Hammersmith & City lines) both sit within the neighbourhood.

Tips for Visiting

• Saturday is the full market experience but also the busiest — go early to beat the crowds.
• The coloured houses are private residences — be considerate with photos.
• Golborne Road, at the market's northern end, is quieter and good for a coffee break.
• Book accommodation well ahead if visiting during Notting Hill Carnival weekend.
