What to Pack for London: Seasonal Packing Guide

London packing is primarily about managing the weather — which is reliably unpredictable in any season — and dressing for a lot of walking across varying environments from grand museums to cobbled market lanes.

Year-Round Essentials

A compact umbrella or packable waterproof jacket — rain is likely at some point regardless of season. Comfortable walking shoes — you will walk much more than you expect, and London's museum floors and cobbled areas make footwear the single most important packing decision. A small daypack or tote — useful for museum visits and market browsing. A power adapter (UK uses Type G three-pin plugs). A portable phone charger.

Spring (March–May)

Layers are essential — mornings start cool (8–12°C) and afternoons can reach 18°C by May. A light jacket or cardigan, one or two warmer layers for evenings. The parks are worth visiting so comfortable outdoor shoes matter more than in winter. Light rain-resistant jacket over a jumper is more versatile than a heavy coat.

Summer (June–August)

Warm but not hot by most standards (typically 18–26°C, sometimes higher). Lightweight clothing, but always a light layer for museums (which can be cold) and evenings. A sun hat and sunscreen for outdoor events and park days. The Underground can be very hot — loose, light clothing is more comfortable than anything tight or synthetic.

Autumn (September–November)

September is pleasant and warm; October cools significantly; November is cold. A proper jacket by October, a warm coat by November. Waterproof shoes become more useful from October as rain is more frequent.

Winter (December–February)

A warm coat, scarf and gloves are needed — temperatures regularly drop below 5°C in January and February. Waterproof or water-resistant footwear. Warm layers. Museums provide welcome warmth.

What Not to Bring

An ironing board's worth of formal clothes — London is genuinely casual in most contexts, including mid-range restaurants. Excessive cash — contactless payment works almost everywhere. A full-size umbrella — the London wind makes them impractical; compact ones fold easier.
