Hyde Park
Hyde Park is London's most famous Royal Park — 350 acres of open parkland, lake, gardens and events space in the heart of the city, used daily by millions of Londoners and visited by virtually every tourist. It connects seamlessly with Kensington Gardens to the west, effectively creating a single green corridor of over 600 acres through central London.
The Serpentine
The Serpentine Lake (the eastern section; the western section in Kensington Gardens is called the Long Water) is the park's centrepiece — rowing boats and pedalos are available to hire in summer, and the Serpentine Lido opens for swimming from June to September. The Serpentine Gallery and its annual summer Pavilion commission sit on the south bank.
Diana Memorial Fountain
The oval granite channel opened in 2004 in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales — water flows around the ring from two high points and children paddle in the shallow flow on warm days. Free to visit; located in the southeast of the park near the Albert Memorial.
Speakers' Corner
The northeast corner of Hyde Park, near Marble Arch, has been a traditional site for public speaking and debate since the 1860s and is protected by law as a place for free speech. Sunday mornings are when speakers are most likely to be found — political, religious and eccentric in roughly equal measure.
Winter Wonderland
From mid-November to early January, the south side of the park hosts Winter Wonderland — Europe's largest Christmas market. Free to enter, with paid rides, ice rinks, food stalls and a genuinely festive atmosphere. Weekday evenings are much less crowded than weekends.
Getting There
Multiple entrances: Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly line), Marble Arch (Central line), Lancaster Gate (Central line) and Queensway (Central line) all give park access.
Tips
- The park is free and open daily — no booking, no ticket, no queues at the gate.
- Speakers' Corner on a Sunday morning is a uniquely London experience.
- The Serpentine Lido swimming is open June–September — arrive early on hot days.
- Winter Wonderland: weekday evenings have the best atmosphere without the weekend crowds.
