Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum on the south side of the Thames in Lambeth covers conflict from World War One to the present across five floors — free to enter, with permanent galleries on WWI, the Holocaust, and a rotating programme of temporary exhibitions. One of the most thoughtfully curated museums in London.

Highlights

The WWI galleries are the most celebrated, rebuilt for the centenary and covering the experience of soldiers, civilians and medics with real depth. The Holocaust Galleries (opened 2021) are among the most important museum spaces in the country. The large objects gallery on the ground floor — tanks, aircraft, V-2 rocket — gives immediate impact on arrival.

Hours & Getting There

Open daily 10am–6pm. Free entry to permanent galleries. Lambeth North (Bakerloo line) is the nearest station, about a 10-minute walk. Temporary exhibitions are ticketed separately.

Tips

• Allocate three to four hours minimum — the museum is larger and denser than it appears.
• The Holocaust Galleries require an emotionally prepared visit — not suitable for very young children.
