London Dungeon

The London Dungeon is a theatrical walk-through attraction on the South Bank, using live actors, special effects and rides to recreate dark episodes from London's history — Jack the Ripper, the Great Plague, Sweeney Todd, Guy Fawkes and the torture chambers of the Tower of London among them. It's part horror-house, part history lesson, primarily aimed at teenagers and adults who enjoy being scared.

What to Expect

The experience runs around 90 minutes as a guided group through a series of themed sets with live actor performances. It's not a museum — the historical accuracy is deliberately sensational — but the production values are high and the performances are usually entertaining. There's a drop-ride at the end. Not recommended for young children or those easily frightened.

Adult tickets start from around £22 booked online in advance — significantly cheaper than on-the-door prices. The London Dungeon is part of the Merlin group, which also runs the London Eye and Madame Tussauds; combination ticket deals are available if you're planning to visit multiple Merlin attractions. Is It Worth It?

For the right audience — teenagers, adults who enjoy theatrical horror, visitors who want an active and entertaining rather than educational experience — it's well-reviewed. For those expecting serious history or younger children, it's less appropriate. The online booking discount is significant enough that it's worth booking in advance regardless.

Getting There

Located at County Hall on the South Bank, immediately next to the London Eye. Waterloo station (Northern, Bakerloo, Jubilee, Waterloo & City lines) is a 5-minute walk.
