Portobello Road Market in Notting Hill is one of London's most famous markets — a mile-long street that changes character completely from one end to the other, covering antiques, vintage fashion, fruit and veg, and street food across different sections that run on different days.

The Different Sections

Antiques (near the Notting Hill Gate end, Saturday only) — hundreds of dealers selling silverware, jewellery, coins, vintage photography and curiosities. The best dealers tend to set up early; arrive by 9am for the widest selection before the tourist crowd arrives. Fashion and vintage (middle section, mainly Friday and Saturday) — a dense cluster of clothing stalls that ranges from genuine vintage finds to reproduction pieces. Fruit, veg and food (the Golborne Road end) — runs daily and is the most local- feeling section, with Caribbean and Moroccan food stalls alongside produce traders.

When to Go

Saturday is the full market across all sections — also the busiest. Friday covers the fashion section without the full antiques crowd. The Golborne Road food section runs most days.

Getting There

Notting Hill Gate (Central, Circle and District lines) for the antiques end; Ladbroke Grove (Circle and Hammersmith & City lines) for the northern food end.

Tips for Visiting

• For antiques, arrive by 9am Saturday — the best pieces move fast.
• Prices on antiques are often negotiable, especially later in the day.
• The Golborne Road end is the least touristy and most enjoyable for food.
