Somerset House
Somerset House, a grand neoclassical building on the Strand, hosts contemporary art exhibitions, a courtyard that transforms seasonally (fountains in summer, an ice rink in winter), and the Courtauld Gallery within the same complex.
The Courtyard
Free to enter year-round. In summer, 55 fountains provide a popular cooling spot for families. In winter (November–January), the courtyard becomes one of London's most atmospheric ice rinks — book ahead as it sells out.
Exhibitions
Somerset House runs a strong programme of contemporary art, photography and design exhibitions — some free, some ticketed. Check current listings before visiting.
The Courtauld Gallery
Within the same building, the Courtauld holds an exceptional small collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterworks — ticketed separately.
Getting There
Temple or Covent Garden stations are both a short walk.
Tips
- The courtyard fountains are free and a great spot for families in summer.
- Book the winter ice rink well in advance — it sells out.
