Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey has been Britain's coronation church since 1066, hosting every coronation from William the Conqueror to King Charles III, along with royal weddings (William and Kate in 2011) and state funerals (Queen Elizabeth II in 2022). It's also the resting place of over 3,300 notable figures, from kings and queens to Charles Dickens and Isaac Newton.

Opening Hours

Open Monday to Friday 9:30am–3:30pm and Saturday 9:30am–3:00pm (or 3:30pm on Wednesdays). It's a working church, so it's closed to sightseers on Sundays — open for worship only — and can close or shorten hours around state services with little notice.

Ticket Prices

Standard adult entry booked online runs around £27–31, with concessions and family rates available. Booking online in advance is both cheaper and guarantees your entry time, and includes a free audio guide (available in multiple languages). Entry is free if you attend a service such as Evensong, though you won't be able to tour the royal tombs or Diamond Jubilee Galleries during a service.

What to See

Poets' Corner holds memorials to Chaucer, Dickens and dozens of other writers. The Coronation Chair, used at every coronation since 1308, sits in St George's Chapel. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries, included with standard entry, offer a different vantage point up in the medieval triforium.

Tips for Visiting

• Book online at least two weeks ahead for popular dates — timed entry sells out.
• The Abbey is closed to tourists on Sundays — plan around this if it's your only free day.
• Early morning or late afternoon slots tend to be quieter than midday.
• Check for planned closures around state or royal events before you travel.
